Kerrier answer critics of road signs policy

There have been complaints to Kerrier District Council about the new bilingual roadsigns being set up across the district. Three hundred are currently in place. It was claimed that it was costing the tax payers extra money. Kerrier has assured them they are only signs that were going to be replaced anyway, and all the translations have been done for free.

Protests over St Georges Cup coming to Truro

Cornish patriots have called on the mayor of Truro to pull out of a celebration of the patron saint of England, St George.

The Celtic League says the event on 12 March is insensitive to Cornish people who will be celebrating St Piran's Day.

A week of St Piran's events clashes with the "Loving Cup" celebration.

Loving Cup organisers Celebrate St George's Day said the aim was to bring people from communities together.

Fly the flag

30/07/2006

Threat to St Pirans flag from the government

There is a new campaign for the Cornish flag because it is against the law to fly it without permission. It seems the revised list of permissable flags does not include St Piran's. According to the law at the moment, we must ask for permission from our local councils to fly the black and white flag because it is seen as an 'advertisement'. No such permission is needed for St George, Andrew or the Welsh flag.

Because of this, there is a letter writing campaign to get the law changed. Among those who have already written to Yvette Cooper MP (minister for planning) is Dr Nigel Hicks and Michael Chappell. They have said to her that the flag is very important to Cornwall these days. One letter advised that the Duchy is now a World Heritage Site and a large part of the application was based on the culture, with the flag being an important emblem.

So, what can you do? Well, you can write to the government, while raising your own Cornish flag higher and bigger than before.

Who wants to protest in unity with the Breton language

12/05/2006

The 3rd of JUNE has been set for a major Breton Language demonstration in Rennes.

The 3rd of June has been set as the date of a major Breton language demonstration in Rennes. Thousands are expected to be there to demand more power for Brittany in the area of the public media, cultural tradition and language. The Breton movement wishes to pressurize the government in certainty that they won't do anything without this kind of strong urging. Please tell me if you'd like to represent Cornwall in the march and show solidarity for Breton. It would be great to see some Cornish people in the streets too.

TV boss speaks out at French policy towards Brittany

09/11/2005

The interview has appeared in a premiere Breton magazine

On September 1st Patrick le Lay, the Breton chief of France’s main TV channel TF1, hit the French headlines following a frank interview with 'Bretons' magazine. In the interview he denounces the French government’s cultural genocide of the Breton people, jacobinist centralist policies, and how in France he feels that he is a foreigner.

Nothing intelligent to say on Cornish Assembly

12/08/2005

The Government's refusing to move on devolution

Despite a 50,000 strong petition, the support of all Cornish MPs, the support of the Liberal-run Council and District Councils, and all the evidence of economically and culturally successful autonomous regions elsewhere in Europe, the British Government vowed two weeks ago that Cornwall will never have its own Assembly. Now, the UK's rejection of Cornish public opinion is resulting in increased support for an Assembly or Parliament, and Cornish MP Andrew George said that the British government "haven't got anything intelligent to say" on the matter.
